Basically, you can know whether or not you're walking fast enough to improve your current aerobic fitness by whether or not you can sing a song while you walk. You shouldn't walk so fast you can't talk, but it should be fast enough to make singing difficult.

There are many things you can do to keep yourself motivated and entertained while you walk. For example, many people put some music on or make a daily friendship date to walk with friends who are interested in aerobic fitness. The main thing is that you do whatever it takes to keep you going out for exercise every day.

Some people find something as simple as wearing a pedometer to track how far they've walked is motivation enough to keep going. You can set goals for distance or steps. When you achieve those goals for each particular day you are done. It feels good to be able to reach your goals for each day and to extend them a little each week.

Walking isn't your only alternative. If you're a true couch potato or walking is just too boring for you, what about taking some of that television time and using a treadmill or elliptical while you watch? You might add years to your life.
