The Atkins Diet
And Our Obsession With SLIM
Being slim seems to be a societal obsession.Beauty contestants, television stars, and magazine models nearly all share this trait. Everywhere we look, slim people are put
before us as the models of a perfect appearance. These people make money endorsing various diets that they claim will help you look like them. One of the more recent fads
brought to prominence in this fashion is the Atkins diet. The Atkins diet fad changed the way many people eat.
The Atkins diet is a total reversal on the principles health scientists teach for healthy living. It is a way of avoiding carbohydrates in order to trick the body into
burning off the fats and proteins inside it for energy for several months, while also reducing water retention levels.
If you don't follow the rules exactly you will instead end up adding fat to your body.
The Atkins diet is divided up into four key stages of food consumption that must be followed. In the first stage weight loss is usually the greatest. The second stage
is the pre-maintenance stage. The third and fourth stages are maintenance stages. In order to get the most out of the Atkins diet you must also accompany all of these
stages with consistent exercise and supplements.
In the first stage of the Atkins diet some people lose as much as 20 pounds. But you are restricted to a very low carbohydrate intake of 20 grams daily. There are certain
vegetables you may be allowed to eat, such as broccoli, lettuce, and tomatoes. But nearly all fruits and many vegetables are restricted.
One of the healthier aspects of this stage of the Atkins diet is that you cannot have any drinks with carbohydrates, alcohol, or caffeine in them. This may help to stabilize
blood sugar at a time when your body is in confusion about the sudden change in diet. Breaking addictions to sugar, alcohol, and caffeine can only help you in the long run.
Some of these addictions are closely linked with overeating and high carbohydrate cravings.
The big transition comes as you enter the third stage. Ideally you are at your target weight when you enter this stage. You can increase your carbohydrate intake, but only
up to sixty grams daily.
Stage four is basically where you are to be stuck for life, though this is very controversial among health professionals. You probably need about 300 grams of carbohydrates
per day for healthy function. What isn't controversial is that if you return to the lifestyle that made you overweight to begin with you will be overweight again. You must
pay careful attention to eating healthy and exercising regularly for the rest of your life if you are to make the weight loss permanent.
